Wagon Wheel Gap Routeand the Denver & Rio Grande Railway
Known for years as the Creede Branch this rail line headed west from Alamosa, through Monte Vista, on to Del Norte then into South Fork. There it Turned North and followed next to the Rio Grande River until it passed through the mountain pass known as Wagon-Wheel-Gap then into the mining town of Creede.
Originally built in narrow gauge in the 1880's. At the turn of the century it was converted to three rail to allow both forms of rail cars. About 1910 the whole valley was in standard gauge and narrow gauge rail was removed. In the future we would like to see the third rail replaced and be able to operate both gauge trains... The section from South Fork to Creede, now better known as the Wagon Wheel Gap Route is now owned by the D&RG Historical Foundation and will someday again carry passengers and freight up and down this scenic route. |
